Abraham Cruvillegas calls it autoconstrucción, which loosely translates to “self-construction.”
He uses the term not to describe some type of object, but a state of affairs. Something akin to improvisation but from within the specific context of an urban landscape like the one in his childhood home of Colonia Ajusco, a district in the south of Mexico City—an unstable place that sits on volcanic rock, where everything is in a constant state of fragmentation and transformation. It’s a place where change and collaboration are built into any act of construction, and where adjustments are made whenever materials or circumstances demand it. Nothing is ever finished.
This notion informs his own sculptural practice but extends far past that to encompass the way Abraham thinks about materials, landscape, people, and identity more generally.

Abraham comes to New York from Mexico City along with La Bruja de Texcoco, a singer, musician, actress, and dancer. She is an entity in transition of identity—an entity in transition to femininity. Her pronoun is witch. The witch of Texcoco.
“I’m interested in La Bruja de Texcoco’s work,” he says, “as a revelation of ancient voices intertwined with new ones, with more accurate perceptions of the specific needs of the 21st century—not only in terms of gender politics, but also as related to the future of music as a field of production of knowledge, pleasure, and desire.”
Singing and playing the harp, La Bruja performs her appropriations of traditional Mexican rhythms while Abraham reads some of his poetry.
This event is made possible with the friendly support of AeroMexico and kurimanzutto.
